SADDLEBACK DEBATE: SIDE BY SIDE COMPARISONS
Even the Daily Kos kids concede (Although they have probably now been banned for this concession)….Obama needs a teleprompter 24/7, or it’s over…
BTW…the Obama we saw last night…… is the Obama we Chicagoans have always known……
when the toughest decision you have ever made in your life……is an inconsequential/vanity vote against the war, in the Illinois State Senate, while you are representing Louis Farrakhan’s 13 district, than you probably haven’t had to make too many tough decisions…..I mean can you imagine if he had voted for the war, and went to Trinity the following week?….you think Rev. Wright would have approved?
…..also, I really want to know what intelligence he had, that informed him to make this “gut wrenching” decision…..did all state senators across the country get in-depth intelligence regarding the Iraq war?…..I don’t think so…..I mean I don’t know….answering that question with specificity … is above my pay grade…

I like your passionate style. Beeing an German Immigrant and for this election not eligible to vote, I see exactly what you are talking/writing about. Obama, when I saw him first and listened to him struck me as a great speaker, but now seeing more and more footage about him when hes has no teleprompter, I can’t even listening to his “uhh….ahh…uhhh” the whole time. His answer are so “wishy-washy”, back paddeling in almost weekly manner, which already developed as a habit, etc. Now he suddenly wants to touch the taxes not earlier then 10 years…well after a possible double term. He changes in my opionion to often, and it looks now that we see what “in-experience” means. Also when McCain seems to be “too old”, he is at least straight forward with his idea of the interpretation Americas Founding Fathers, and putting his country first. From Obama’s side it looks like he wants only to win, because he promised his wife to do so…whatever it takes.
Thank you for your interesting point of view on Obama.

The Presidential Forum at Saddleback Church was a great opportunity to observe the differences between Barack Obama and John McCain. There were several clear differences that we all know about: Roe v Wade, the war in Iraq, the Supreme Court judges to name a few.
But what was even more interesting was what it revealed about their character, confidence and intelligence. On these points, they were very different.
When McCain answered questions, he was a bit uncomfortable and fearful of each coming question stating “I hope they get easier,” and later, “They don’t get any easier!” When he was asked basic questions about issues in his platform, his answers were quick, short and delivered with a punch designed to demonstrate his toughness. For McCain, this forum was an opportunity to promote his image. But when McCain’s questions were more philosophical, less policy oriented, he would lose his footing. He floundered, until the moment when he figured out a way to apply old war stories, or recycled stump speeches “we need to drill here and we need to drill now!” On the question of naming the three people he most admired, his face lit up and said General Petraeus, giving himself an opening to continue his usual rhetoric of how we won the war in Iraq, etc.
Overall, McCain did a good job reasserting his image and re-stating his policies, but he did not seem natural. What I learned about McCain his that he lacks confidence and seems afraid that he might reveal something about his soul. He would use jokes to buy time and cover his inadequacies. He fell back on tried and true recycled answers that were sophomoric and showed no depth and revealed nothing new.
Obama, on the other hand, responded to all questions thoughtfully, giving respect to Rev. Warren by answering his questions in the true spirit for which they were asked. Obama saw this as an opportunity for Americans to get to know him and he seised it. By being more natural, relaxed and confident and by reaching into his soul for his answers, the audience got a broader understanding of Barack Obama. He thought seriously about the questions and answered from his soul. He was not only unafraid of what he might reveal about his deepest thoughts, he made every attempt to do just that.

Obama was just terrible. Obama seemed so scared and very insecure w/o the telepromoter. His usual “uuuuhhhh,” “ummmm,” stuttering and stammering, was just awful and that was Barry Soetro we all knew.
Yes, that was Barky we all familiar with.
McCain won hands down. He responded to all questions confidently and honestly. His charactor shone. He was at times funny, connecting to the audience, and we felt his intelligence and maturity. McCain’s experience exuded. Yes, indeed, straight talk.
No wonder Barky avoids one to one Town Hall debates with McCain.
I felt very bad and embarrased for Barack Barry Soetro Obama.

It seems to me that the people responding about this debate were not all watching the same debate. Some say Obama was confident and McCain scared and insecure while others say that McCain was confident and obama was scared and insecure. I guess they see what they want to see. As an independent, I liked John McCains answers better. I can’t imagine asking my wife and my grandmother for advice on running the country. And I don’t think a president (or candidate) should decline answering a question because it it above his “pay grade.” At this point there should be no existing topic left unstudied.

When it comes to questions of faith, Obama was terrified anyone would ask him questions about his Muslim/Islamic background. He profeses “never to have been a muslim”, or “never to have been a practicing Muslim”, but independent research proves otherwise. While studying in Islamic schools as a child, he was given Islamic studies. Yet he will not be honest with the American people about this and so many other things. While sitting for 20 years in a racist Church, professing to study the teachings of Christ, they persistently presented hate-filled speeches about America, whites, Jews, and others. I never heard anyone coming out of that church talking about Jesus’ sermon on the mount, Love Your Enemies (whites, Americans, Jews), bless them that curse you, etc. etc. etc., only black-separatist, liberation theology.
Unfortunately if I had to place my trust in either Obama or McCain, even with all his limitations, I would choose McCain (and I am a lifelong Democrat). This is one tough election!

” … above my pay grade.” This from someone who believes he’s already president?

Though I agree that McCain did better than Obama, I doubt that the discussion will have much of an effect on anything. Given a choice of a religious/political discussion on a Saturday night in August, most of the relatively few people who were home watching television were tuned to the Olympics. McCain was going to get the conservative evangelical vote, anyway, though he may have boosted his credibility with the folks he once termed “agents of intolerance.” Obama may have countered the ongoing fiction that he is a Muslim for some people, though the people stupid enough to believe that may not be able to figure out how to vote, anyway–and if they do, they weren’t going to vote for Obama.
I am a bit troubled that the candidates felt they needed to attend a church-sponsored discussion at all, a further complication of what I see as an often negative relationship between religion and presidential politics. It would bother me less if the candidates felt equally compelled to answer questions from a union leader, a state governor, the mayor of a major American city (Chicago, New Orleans or New York, perhaps?), a panel of teachers and parents, and a panel of economists.

I have to say that I’m a little tired of the accusation that Obama is a Muslim simply because he went to an Islamic school. Many families in America choose to send their children to Catholic schools, for instance, whether or not the believe in the Catholic theology. I think it is silly to pigeonhole someone for the choice THEIR PARENTS made for them.
August 18, 2008 at 9:40 pm
…hmm Jo i’m not so sure that the issue is if he did or didn’t attend muslim schools – because clearly he did – but i think it’s more of an issue as to why he won’t admit it.
i understand your frustration with the accusation stuff..i could really care less where he went to grade school.
honesty, on the other hand – that does matter.

The Peoples Temple was initially structured as an inter-racial mission for the sick, homeless and jobless. He assembled a large following of over 900 members in Indianapolis IN during the 1950’s.
“He preached a ’social gospel’ of human freedom, equality, and love, which required helping the least and the lowliest of society’s members. Later on, however, this gospel became explicitly socialistic, or communistic in Jones’ own view, and the hypocrisy of white Christianity was ridiculed while ‘apostolic socialism’ was preached.”
Jim Jones was just another variation on Liberation Theology

This has to be one of the most frightening election years since Nixon. McCain did come off better he definitely appeared to be more qualified for the job.
Still both candidates leave alot to be desired. Does McCain want the job as President or not? He seems to be half-heartedly campaigning between naps.
Maybe I’ll do a write in.

Obama lied in the interview given right after the forum. He voted against the Born Alive bill. MSM is ignoring it- I have the news on my blog and you can also find it at Human Events and some other conservative news oulets.

The chap is hitting the fan on Hannity tonight. Big fight with Bob Bernal and Hannity about Obama’s abortion stance. Hannity walked a thin line, never calling him a baby killer, but Bob wanted to take it to that level. Hannity had the minutes from the ILL. committee. Obama is cornered pretty good now.
August 20, 2008 at 10:56 am
Yeah , Denise , I saw that ! Bob Beckal and Colmes are both liars and spin idiots. How dare anyone challenge thier boy Obama. I fine example of someone that lives a lie.
I wonder if Bob was going around calling our soldiers in Viet Nam baby killers back in the day, oh but to have done that would be OK eh?

It’s really obvious (if by nothing else your title) you guys are not for Obama and that’ quite okay. The problem I have is with your obvious attitude McCain is this great guy with impecable credentials. VOLKER talks about “His answer are so “wishy-washy”…blah, blah, blah. Yet, I didn’t see him point out how McCain flip flops on almost a weekly basis on just about every issue he claims is core to his campaign.
In speaking of integrity, how can McCain or his supporters even bring themselves to question another’s integrity after the savings and loan scandle fiasco McCain was instrumential in bringing about? Let’s get real. McCain is obviously trying to continue a series of failed policies initiated by his mentor, George Bush. McCain stated in a recent interview that “Obama still can’t bring himself to acknowledge his own failures…” Is he serious? Failure is McCain’s middle name especially when it comes to being honest with how he is misleading the voters.
And, if Hannity is your litmus test you guys are definately lost. Listen, I have no problem with you being loyal to your candidate but let’s be fair, don’t paint him as some holier than thou superhero who will save the country.
VOLKER, I for one am happy you can’t vote.

but mccain’s affiliation with the savings and loan scandal is scantly as telling (or as intricate, apparently) as some of barrack’s affiliations…fair to say?

Great Blog here – I just found it today.
The funniest thing is that as a Junior Army Intelligence Analyst for the US Army I probably had more information than he did in the Illinois State Senate.
The biggest difference between Obama and McCain in these “town hall” formats is that Obama talks his way around the issue (and makes it sound like a sermon – that really annoys me) while McCain usually is straight to the point.
As someone that is not from Chicago (but has visited and absolutely loved it), I wish more Americans could actually learn about the guy instead of every time someone questions him they get labeled a racist or a Republican hack (which I am neither).
I’ve been following closely since the primaries and I have learned nothing of his policies except that he wants to raise taxes (uggghhh) and spend more (double ugh). Oh and that he sides on the side of killing when life is in question.
Like everyone else, I know everything about McCain and nothing about the media’s “chosen one”

Obama’s story about working with McCain is also false–
Obama’s story about McDonalds was false…

McCain gave all the answers he knew that people wanted to hear.
Obama didn’t seem to have canned answers or give answers that would be sure to get a cheer from the audience. He knows what they would cheer about. He just didn’t say those things.
But in politics you have to tell people what you know they want to hear, if you want to win. You definitely can’t give thoughtful, significant answers. Just glamorous sound bites and cheap drama.
August 21, 2008 at 10:07 pm
If anyone is a master at telling people what they want to hear, it’s Barack Obama. His position-shifting makes John Kerry look steadfast. What his fans call “nuance” is nothing more than artful evasiveness, as in voting “present” 130 times in the Chicago State Senate. This is where he claims to have made the “toughest decision” of his life, speaking out against the Iraq war at a safe remove from the u.S. Senate while running for re-election as a representative of an ardently anti-war district. I don’t consider “It’s above my pay grade” a thoughtful or significant answer to the question of when the human rights of a fetus begin–and I’m pro-choice.

I watched and listened to Obama because I found it interesting that a never heard of someone, could come straight out of left field and be proclaimed as the next president of this country! After each time I watched and listened to him I was left with the question, what is this guy trying to tell people? He misquoted the bible 3 times so badly that what he attributed to the scripture was not even close! He never said a word about what or how Change was going to work or do. It was a lot of pretty words strung together meaning absolutely nothing. Shakespeare said it best ” a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more; it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” By the way, that is from Macbeth if you want to check it out. The “ummms and ahhhhs” that go on when he is speaking extemporaneously are maddening and why a man who cannot speak publicly off of the cuff any better, thinks he knows enough to be president is a great puzzle to many people. His body language and facial expressions give him the eliteist look and whoever said McCain flipped daily must have been listening to the wrong guy. McCain changed on the illegal immigration and drilling, with the reason that he heard the American people loud and clear, and the job of the government is to do the will of the people, something the Democrats have never learned!

Uh WHAT? Spit it out! He is so impossible to listen to.
